So here we are. This is the second contribution of Matteus to Orila after the 3” split with No Clear Mind (orl01). A small diamond recorded between Greece and Iceland. Throat starts to vibrate
Matteus’ project “Ugly Doll’s Stories” is an ode to non-communication between human beings and the way people are taken advantage by others. Imagine yourself entering a toy shop shop and every doll has its own story to tell about how it got there or how it ended up there. The buying of a doll and the few minutes in the shop are transformed into a long journey with voices and stories ending up into a narration from each doll’s point of view dealing with matters such as love, emotional breakdowns, separation, solitude and happiness. “Maybe for all these reasons it took me so long to finish this record… The need to fully understand these stories and the roles that those characters were playing inside my head. This need pushed me to search for solutions and possibilities all the way to Iceland. Stuck in a church Northwest of Iceland for quite some time, actually helped to capture all these voices that i was hearing. This record is the Morse signal that i tried to fully decode.”
Special thanks to Vincent Moon, Thomas Rabillon & Orestis Plakias for live assistance on temporary Athens
Who is Matteus
Matteus was born in Athens, 1982. He started playing the piano at the age of 5 then started to experiment with analogue keyboards equipments and the harpsichord. At the age of 10 the first record he bought was Laurie Anderson’s “Big Science” which later on was proved a big influence sonically and visually. Matteus early works range from avant-garde vocal experimentations to noise / ambient sounds. His first full length work “Silent Radiowaves” was first presented live at the Athens Small Music Theatre in 2005. His next project was a series of songs entitled “Waiting for the Sunset to Drown” ; a collection of songs written for piano and voice. After a series of live performances, in the summer of 2008, Matteus started working on the Ugly Doll’s Stories project. Ugly Doll’s Stories was finished a few months ago and was recorded between Athens and Hvammstangi, Iceland.
“My mission is to make the listener think. I know that i don’t make music that someone can listen to a club or on the radio. For me, everything lies between travelling and discovering; travelling into the darkest places of your mind or places you have never been before. Maybe because you were afraid until now, or maybe you never knew that those places existed, either out there, either into your own, very personal microcosm. For me , this is the zero point that my throat starts to vibrate…” The sound of this work is based on electronics while pianos, harpsichord, marimba and the theremin create a dark, retro, ambient atmosphere

A few words on KU
Since the year two thousand he has been experimenting with sound, initially using a cheep personal computer under the alias Breccia, composing extreme noisy gabber techno and ambient atmospheric compositions. In two thousand and six he meets with artist Georgia Sagri with whom he collaborates for two years, recording as a creative pair, under the name SUKU. With the exclusive use of instruments such as guitars, cello, analogue keys and natural sources of noise SUKU record and release four albums in hand made collectible editions. After the hiatus of SUKU he continues his personal path of experimentation by recording, performing concerts and collaborating with various artists (the Curators, Rakette) using the pseudonym KU. In two thousand and eight he assembles the electroacoustic free-form noise trio BEN alongside the noise duo Acte Vide. Simultaneously he also kicks off his collaboration with Larry Gus (Panagiotis Melidis) with whom they form KULA, an exercise in the style of experimental recordings from German and French composers of Library Music. Year two thousand and nine finds him in London where he collaborates with musician Vasilis Moschas (Grains) in their experimental pop duo RABIT. After his return to Athens he begins recording with THORIVOS under the name Schampeau, with the exclusive use of noise sources and natural feedback. During the same period he meets with musician Mano Plizzi and together they create MT DÜ. KU has taken part in concerts in many circumstances that vary from the Athens Biennale to DIY home gigs. This is his first official release in collaboration with Orila records.

A few words on Ping Pong Show
Ku – Ping Pong Show is a live recoding of the Ping Pong radio Show hosted on tripradio/dot/gr since February two thousand and ten by the orila team. Unedited and replicated from the original recording on a cassette tape deck it is now out as it was initially conceived on March 2nd. Six tracks of psych pop isolation by Dimitris Papadatos. Here we find ourselves in alien terrain. Internet radio producing old school analogue tapes. KU releasing his first official album that is filled with obsessions, burst outs and romance. Kraut inflictions, dark vocals, drones and high frequencies transforming to birds. A trip promised through the use of casio keyboards, 8bit machines, mic and a mixer. KU’s voice seems to be echoing from far away while his songs grow to become utterly personal in reference. Atonal intentions, broken storytelling, a note for every instance of the setting sun in this lost city. Dedicated to a dog called calamari.

A few words on Theodore Sifantos’s newest release*
Washes of hidden melody pervade under peeling layers of urban blur. On the surface, masses of damp distortion covering every inch of the room, and underneath a heavy dose of guitar psychedelia setting the scene. On the surface, a heavy dose of guitar psychedelia setting the scene, and underneath masses of damp distortion covering every inch of the room. Works either way really, while the ear follows the ever-present melodic and rhythmic ramblings, a steady game of atmosphere and texture is played out; one that gives the mind space to concentrate on fleeting emotions of a borderline existential nature. Nods to urban blues, greek ‘rembetika’ and psychedelic rock. Like a desolate midnight party, with no-one but you attending…
A few words on Amnesia
Born in Athens in 1966, he has studied music and graphic arts. Founder member of the band Vinyl Junkies and producer of experimental music projects on Baltimore’s College Radio in the United States. Radio producer and TV producer in Greece, he has also been active as a writer in music magazines (Pop & Rock, Reflex). Disk-jockey at several clubs in Athens. Sifantos creates his own music/persona under the Amnesia moniker.

* The digital version of Absurd Fiction is slightly different to the Cd-r. The 7th track was randomly (?) mixed with a few seconds of another set of audio takes in the process of digitalisation, we found it interesting so we kept it as is.
